☆ Must See: Series + Youtube ☆

The Fifth Sense, Episode 2: Making Images with Harley Weir – This video is a must-see for any creative, every scene so beautifully crafted. What was even more empowering was seeing female creatives doing what they love. Watch it on Youtube here.

A Guide to Being a Modern Lady with Natalie Westling – Fuck gender roles. Simple as that. Shall I say more?  Watch it on Youtube here.

My Place: Devendra Banhart –  There is something about Devendra Banhart that I can’t simply put into words. In this film, Devendra gives us a tour of his place, very much reflecting his music. His witty sense of humor paired with pastel color schemes and abstract paintings, make for an interesting video, to say the least. Watch it on Youtube here.

A Teenage Whistleblower Defies Mass Produced “Bullshit”: Roberta – StyleLikeU recently came out with a project called “What’s Underneath” where participants strip down and open up as each garment comes off. This episode in particular resonated a lot with me. Roberta opens up about her insecurities, many that I deal with in the present. She also speaks about society’s frenzy with mass produced “bullshit” and how we are constantly surrounded by images of the “perfect body” on ads, magazines, etc. Watch it on Youtube here.

Lazy Morning Routine  – Freya’s filming is enchanting and her style is refreshing.  A different take on the usual morning routines. Watch it on Youtube here.

The A-Z of Slang The group of friends you always wanted, a perfect way to describe this generation. Funny and aesthetically pleasing. I attempted to use “quiche” and “I can’t even” at least once this month. Watch it on Youtube here.

Being “The Pretty Girl” Isn’t Always So Pretty In Hollywood: Caitlin Stasey – Another segment of the “What’s Underneath” project, this video really opens your eyes to the not so pretty side of Hollywood and the shallow expectations. Caitlin Stasey has such an insightful mind addressing the superficial elements in the film industry. She questions and challenges what society refers to as the “norm” opposing to be regarded as just a “pretty girl” when she is so much more. Watch it on Youtube here.

☆ Food + Drinks ☆

All of these are 100% vegan! Enjoy xx

Pancakes – On early Saturday mornings pancakes are my go-to comfort food. Pair with your favorite podcast and warm coffee for a perfect morning in bed. Check out my favorite recipe here.

Mushroom Tacos –  Sauté mushrooms, onion, & tomatoes in a pan and season with paprika, garlic powder, & black pepper! Add toppings such as cilantro, guac, and salsa. YUM.

Spicy Buffalo Cauliflower Wings w/ Celery & Ranch  – After having them over at my friends’ place one day, I knew I had to try out the recipe for myself. Perfect for a movie or game night. So delicious, check out PETA’s recipe here.

Denny’s Boca Burger + Fries – Late nights call for burger and fries. Whether you’re coming from a concert or planning an all-night study session with friends, Denny’s is the place to go. Open 24/7, Denny’s has a variety of vegan options, from their veggie skillets to their English muffins. However, my go-to order is their Boca burger. They have an option to build your own burger so I like to add tomatoes, jalapeños, avocado, sauteed mushrooms, lettuce, & caramelized onions on mine.

Lentil Sloppy Joes – I basically mention Liv’s channel on my food favorites every month, but what I can say, her recipes are simply so easy and delicious! I can easily say my sister and I have eaten this sloppy joe recipe at least once a week this month. Watch how to make them here.

Grilled Cheese + Tomato Soup – A definitely favorite of mine this month. For this recipe you will need:

  • Slices of Chao cheese (or whatever vegan cheese brand you like!)
  • 2 slices of bread
  • Vegan butter
  • *Optional Fillings: spinach, tomato, etc!

Heat your pan over medium heat.  Spread vegan butter on the outside of each slice of bread. Add the vegan cheese and your preferred toppings then place sandwich on the pan. Cover with a lid, cooking each side for about 3-4 minutes. Enjoy with a side of tomato soup!

McDonalds’ Apple Pie & Burger King’s French Toast – Not the healthiest, but good for a seldom occasion. This month, I was running late to class one morning and forgot to eat breakfast altogether. My sister and I took a shuttle after class, in search of some breakfast. The nearest places were Mcdonalds and Burger King, and after a quick google search, I was pleasantly surprised.  I discovered the french toast from Burger King is vegan and $1 for 3 pieces? For all of us broke college students, Burger King has really come through. My sister opted for an apple pie from Mcdonalds, our first visit there since we became vegan.

Chickpea Salad Sandwich – Perfect for picnics at the park. Pair it with some chips and lemonade and enjoy the sound of birds chirping and laughter in the distance. Check out the recipe here.

☆ Other ☆

Attending Art Exhibitions – Supporting local artists is something I encourage you to do wherever you reside. Many artists are underrated and their work is not always recognized. My city has an art walk every last Thursday of the month displaying local artists work. You get a chance to talk to the artists about their art pieces and inspirations behind them. Look up art exhibitions around your city and support your local artists!

Reading at the Park – Reading at the park brings a sense of relaxation. A break from idle conversations and small talk surrounded simply by the sound of nature. Currently, I am reading “Paris to the Moon” by Adam Gopnik, a dreamy take on Paris from its small cafés to its inner beauty, Gopnik achieves an intimacy with the reader.

Podcasts, Podcasts, Podcasts – On my walk to class, on the bus, laying in bed at night, with my morning coffee, podcasts were mostly what I listened to this month. Some of my favorites include Friday Night In, Crash On My Couch, Modern Love, & Rookie. All of these can be found on Itunes. Let me know if you would like me to compose an article featuring all my favorite podcasts!

Reading Old Horoscopes – This month my best friend visited from Austin, and we departed on a short road trip. We found ourselves in a small town called Las Cruces, stumbling upon a few local thrift shops and a local bookshop. We quickly hovered over the astrology section, reading each other’s horoscopes from the 70’s. Even though they were pretty much irrelevant, it was a nice way to reflect on past times.

Crushed Flowers: A Poem by Selina Nwulu – So beautifully worded, her words make you reflect on your own experiences. Read the poem here.

Earrings – Earrings can complete any simple outfit. This month I’ve been obsessing over funky earrings buying many from local thrift shops or Etsy stores like “Later Operator. Buy some cherry earrings to add an extra pop to your white tee and vintage Levi jeans look.

Volunteering at a Local Library  – I try to go to my local library at least every two weeks. The aisles are usually empty leaving space for me to sit in the corner and flip through a selection of mystery novels or poems. During one of my visits, I found my usual corner taken by another amused teen, leaving me to wander through the rest of the library. I found myself at their tiny bookshop, eventually sparking a conversation with the lady who owned it. She expressed her need for volunteers and seeing that I usually spent a majority of my time there I offered. Her eyes sparked, shocked a teen wanted to volunteer, as her usual volunteers were past the age of 30. Currently, it is my second week as a volunteer, I find it very interesting flipping through dusty books and making conversation with older volunteers hearing stories from their teenage years.
