March was the month of perfecting the art of wearing headbands, collaborating with creative individuals, and indulging in the sweet bliss of spring break. Enjoy a recollection of this last month through my thoughts scribbled on coffee-stained napkins followed by the music that filled my days.

Must See: Films + Series + Youtube
Youth and Intimacy in a Small French Town – Simplicity is truly the key. This short film follows a group of adolescents who find the beauty in their small town expressing their feelings unapologetically. Unravels a sense of self-discovery and vulnerability within one’s self.. Watch it on Youtube here.
Daniel Arnold’s New York – This short and simple film gives you a glimpse of the world through the eyes of a photographer. With every step he takes, there’s a different human essence to captivate. The creative process for this film was unique and refreshing. Watch it on Youtube here.
Dazed and Confused – Easily one of my favorite movies of all time. It captures the thrill of what it means to be a teenager in the 70’s to the core. What I love about this film is that every upcoming generation can watch it and still be able to relate to it on some level.
How To Attract The Right People In Your Life – Angelina is one of the few YouTubers I watch that always covers topics I feel so deeply about. In this video, she talks about the law of attraction and how it can influence our lives immensely. I wish I could have heard these words when I was younger because I use to conform to toxic friendships in fear of being alone. Over time, I learned to find complete bliss in being alone and felt happier than when I was surrounded by individuals. With this new mindset, sooner than later, I found myself to have a good circle of friends that I could talk to for hours, experience new things with, and simply rely on. At the time I didn’t know it, but as I watched Angelina’s video, it was definitely the Law of Attraction that brought the right people into my life. Watch it on Youtube here.
What would your final photo be? – So mesmerizing. No need for explaining. Watch it on Youtube here. Let us know your thoughts!
Santana Live at Woodstock Music Festival 1969 – This semester I decided to take a Chicano studies class and it was easily one of the best classes I have ever taken. We discuss Chicano artists and their musical style all ranging from Rock to Jazz. This month we watched a clip from Santana’s Woodstock live performance in the 60’s and I instantly fell in love with their music. Everyone in the crowd was grooving to their sound and it just made me wish I was alive in that era to experience it. Watch it on Youtube here.
Food + Drinks
Johnny Rockets // Food Chain – They recently opened a Johnny Rockets near my college campus and after I heard they offered a vegan option, I couldn’t resist. I like to order the Boca burger without mustard or pickles and add avocado + jalapenos with a side of fries. So delish. *Hack: bring your own packet of vegan mayo!
Dunkin’ Donuts // Food Chain – A favorite for those long nights with heaps of college homework. Their iced coffee is surprisingly cheap for the size (plus they don’t charge extra for almond milk). My order consists of a medium iced coffee with almond milk/no cream or sugar / + pump of caramel. If I’m hungry, I’ll also order a side of hashbrowns and a plain bagel with jelly.
Salads – I’m beginning to get into the habit of making salads for lunch or dinner. They’re super easy to make if you are in a rush and don’t have time to cook!
March’s Favorite combo:
Base // spinach + kale
Add // corn, broccoli, shredded carrots, chickpeas, red bell peppers, & cucumbers
Top with // hummus + avocado
Z Pizza – After a night out, my friends and I headed for pizza and found this gem in West Hollywood. From all the countless vegan pizzas I’ve eaten, this place serves the best vegan pizza by far. My sister and I shared a large pizza called “Berkely Vegan” which consisted of their housemade marinara sauce, Daiya vegan cheese, Beyond Meat vegan sausage, roasted zucchini, baby heirloom tomatoes, roasted mushrooms, roasted red onions, & bell peppers. Do I need to say more?
French Toast – Whenever a friend cooks for you, I think I speak for everyone when I say they gain a bigger place in your heart. After an all-nighter that consisted of creating content for Reef, Josh (Reef’s own music editor) and I, knocked out but not before watching the sunrise. We woke up around noon and headed to the supermarket. After I bought some vegan snacks, we headed back to his place to make some breakfast. He decided to make some french toast for the both of us (his first attempt at cooking a vegan meal). So delicious.
Play some groovy tunes and make this recipe with a friend!
Ingredients // (Makes 4 french toast)
- 2 bananas
- 4 pieces of whole wheat bread
- 1/2 tsp of cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
- Mix all ingredients (apart from the bread) in a bowl.
- Dip each slice of bread in the mixture.
- Melt vegan butter in a skillet and flip bread until golden brown on each side. (2-4 minutes)
Top With //
- powdered sugar
- maple syrup
Pasta w/ Garlic + Vegan Butter – Pasta is the perfect meal to have at anyone’s place if you’re vegan because 99% of the time they will have more than enough in their pantry. This is also the easiest and (cheapest) meal to make if you’re a broke college student. Simply boil some water, add your pasta, and top with some garlic and vegan butter!
Lasagna Soup – LASAGNA SOUP? Is that even a thing? I know, trust me, that’s what I thought initially, but boy was I wrong. My sister and I have eaten this meal at least 2 times this WEEK. Someone, please stop us. Check out Liv’s channel because she makes such creative meals with healthy and delicious ingredients. What’s not to love?
Wearing Headbands & Scarves – Whenever I feel like wearing a simple outfit, for example, a black tank and Levi jeans, adding a scarf or headband is the perfect final touch. You can find a variety at thrift shops for $1-2!
Writing in Napkins – This is something I have gotten in the habit of doing, not meaning to do so in the beginning. My notes folder in my iPhone is overfilled with thoughts that circulate my brain at all hours of the day. Sitting at a coffee shop, my phone was dead and all I had was a pen and a napkin. Something about writing my thoughts down on actual pen and paper, rather than on a screen, makes it feel much more heartfelt.
“But I have been known to write on all sorts of weird things when I didn’t have a notepad with me.“The names of the Hogwarts Houses were created on the back of an aeroplane sick bag. Yes, it was empty.” – J.K Rowling. Check out the full interview here.
New Tattoos – Oh, the art of tattoos. This month I decided to get a tattoo with the word “create” in a typewriter font. What I love is that this word has endless definitions all meaning a different thing to every individual. To me, it inspires me to create something every day even if it’s just for me. It keeps me fascinated with all the little things, to create something from them. Located on the inside of my arm, it is always a sweet surprise to wake up to.
Make Things Happen for Yourself – If there’s something I’ve learned over time is that opportunities don’t come to you, you have to go out and get them yourself. Make things happen for yourself. If you’ve been dreaming about moving to New York, dropping out of college and becoming an aspiring photographer, work towards those goals. You have no one to comply to but yourself.
Spontaneous Concerts – I’m usually the one that has concerts planned in advance, playing a band’s entire album discographies on a loop and counting down until the day of the concert. This month, however, a Tuesday night with no plans except for face masks and tea, turned into a night of music and dancing. What I loved was that although I didn’t know the band’s entire setlist, I was able to leave with newly discovered favorites.
