Surviving College like a Pro

Listen While Reading: Flowers // VIVIAN

College. Visions of books piling up on a desk, pulling all nighters with cups of coffee all around, and a gigantic amount of work that seems to never end pops up into the mind. College is quite an interesting time, but also one of the best. It’s a time to discover who we are and discover how what we want to do for the rest of our lives.

At the same time, the idea of trying to choose one thing to do for the rest of your life is quite stressful and scary. There is a lot of pressure to choose a degree and start a career as soon as we graduate from high school.

When I started my first year of college, I was a very confused individual. I had an idea of where I wanted to be, but I had no idea what I wanted to do in that field. I felt a little out of place because it seemed everyone else around me knew exactly where they were headed. But I slowly started to get the hang of things, and in the process, I have learned an incredible amount about myself.

College is a big step to take. Sometimes all the work seems impossible to handle and balance in our busy lives. But in the end, all the hard work and lack of sleep will be completely worth it. The path to the finish line can be quite fun too.

Try a little bit of everything. Go to club day and see all the variety of clubs your school has to offer. Joining a couple clubs is not only great for a resume for the future, but it also allows you to do something outside of school. It could be a club involving something you love or maybe something you have never thought to try before like a salsa dancing club. You get to meet so many amazing people and forget about school for a while. This also gives you an opportunity to discover more about yourself.

Always stay involved with your hobbies, whether it be reading, singing, hiking, drawing, etc. After a long 12 hour day at school, when I come home, I am drained. But there’s nothing like flopping down on my bed, cuddling under a blanket, and reading for a little bit. It distresses me.

Stay organized. Having a planner or notebook to outline what needs to be done and what is due is so helpful. The best part is checking off the list as you get things done.

Go out and discover the world. College is the perfect time to go out and see what the world has to offer. Travel and live life. After a long week of school and work, venture out to the city or stay close by and have a delightful dinner at a new restaurant. Meet new people and go on adventures.

Talk to everybody. Say hello to the person sitting next to you in class or in the study hall. I’ve always been a shy person. But going into college, I didn’t know anyone. It was hard for me at first, but soon I started to say hi to people I sit next to in class, and before I knew it, I had a study buddy or simply someone to interact with.

Lastly, and most importantly, treat yourself! Cramming in homework and studying until the middle of the night is beyond exhausting. Treat yourself to your favorite candy, dessert, or coffee. Award yourself. You deserve it.

Although college is extremely nerve-wracking and stressful, so many opportunities are waiting at every door. It gives you a chance to branch out and discover who you are. Follow your passions, live, love, laugh, and smile. Enjoy these important years of your life and the many more amazing ones to come in the future.
